Best antioxidant face serums for brighter skin

Often seen as an optional extra rather than a daily essential, these formulas quietly do some of the toughest work in your routine. They help defend skin against pollution, UV exposure, and ongoing environmental stress that can accelerate visible ageing long before fine lines appear. According to Advanced Nurse Practitioner Emma Wedgwood, founder of Emma Wedgwood Aesthetics, not every product labelled as an antioxidant serum truly qualifies. “From a clinical perspective, an antioxidant serum must contain ingredients that neutralise free radicals,” she explains, highlighting vitamins C and E, ferulic acid, resveratrol, and niacinamide as key examples. However, ingredients alone are not enough. “The formulation must deliver these actives at clinically effective concentrations and in stable forms that can penetrate the skin barrier. Simply listing antioxidants on a label isn’t enough.” Unlike exfoliating acids or resurfacing treatments, antioxidants work in a different way. “Antioxidants work preventively by protecting against environmental damage,” Wedgwood explains, “essentially acting as a shield.” Exfoliants, on the other hand, “physically resurface the skin by breaking down dead cells.” Both are actives, but antioxidants defend while exfoliants renew, which is why balanced routines often include both. When it comes to results, combinations matter. “Yes, antioxidants work synergistically,” she says. “The gold standard is vitamin C combined with vitamin E and ferulic acid, which studies show can increase photoprotection eightfold.” This works because different antioxidants operate at different levels of the skin, providing broader protection together. Timing is also important. “Morning is ideal for antioxidant serums,” Wedgwood advises. Used before SPF, they “offer essential protection against daytime environmental aggressors” and can even enhance sunscreen performance. Evening use can still be beneficial, but if you’re choosing one time, daytime application is the priority.

Medik8 C-Tetra Serum

This is a gentle yet effective vitamin C option often recommended for those new to antioxidant serums. Medik8 uses a stabilised form of vitamin C (tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate) to brighten uneven tone, support natural collagen production, and protect against environmental oxidative stress, while remaining kind to sensitive skin. Enhanced with vitamin E for added defence and delivered in a lightweight, jojoba-based formula, it feels non-greasy and layers smoothly under moisturiser and SPF.

Skincycles Luminesce-C Serum

Designed for visible radiance, this serum contains 5 per cent ascorbic acid to brighten dull skin, help fade dark spots, and support collagen for a firmer appearance. Despite its low price, this is a highly effective everyday serum offering multiple skin benefits. The high concentration of niacinamide supports barrier strength, evens tone, and refines texture, while zinc PCA helps control oil and reduce congestion. The lightweight, water-based formula absorbs quickly under moisturiser or SPF, and consistent use often leads to calmer skin, reduced shine, and smoother-looking pores.
